The “Law”, written in 1850 by Bastiat, a French economist in response to the French Revolution, discusses the ancient republics, among others and Montesquieu, among others, who was the most studied and followed in the forming of our Constitution. Bastiat shines a different light on what the above video “An American form of government” says about republics. “The Law” is a short and clear explanation of a core problem with most governments throughout history, including republics. A must read for anyone concerned about their liberty.
I think it best to stick with a concept, no matter what we choose to call the form. If we allow the few to make law and then give them the authority to use force over the many in the enacting of that law, the many will become enslaved. This is the formula for a criminal government,whether we wish to call it a republic or a democracy.
